Summer 2020 New Works Development Residency

ELIGIBILITY
Dandylyon Drama is seeking a playwright to develop their own “new work” for young actors and family-friendly audiences.
- You must be 18 or older as of July 20, 2020 to apply.
- Playwrights of any experience level are encouraged to apply.
- Playwrights from anywhere in the world may apply. The winner will be responsible for their own travel and lodging expenses to attend the week long residency in Shoreline, WA.
- All playwrights are eligible, including Dandylyon Drama past and present employees. Names will be redacted from submissions before the judging panel sees them.
- Your play or musical must be written or adapted for an approximately 30 minute long performance.
- Works must have had no more than 1 prior production.
- Works must be written for a family-friendly audience and should be appropriate and engaging for performers ages 8-14.
- Works may be written by more than one person, however royalties awarded must be split by all creators equally, and the residency work daily stipend is only available for one person to assist in hands on development of the show.
- Playwrights must be able to pass a background check.
- For the residency, playwrights will need to be present at Shoreline Community College in Shoreline, WA during the week of July 20-24, 2020, from 9am-3pm.
COMPENSATION
$100 Playwright Stipend for Royalties
$150 per day for Residency Work (max total of 5 days)
No reimbursement available for meals, travel expenses, or lodging.
DATES & DESCRIPTION
The winning New Work will be selected by a committee of playwrights, directors, and actors, and community members with experience in youth theater. The playwright of the selected new work gets to develop a 30-minute section of their play or musical during a one-week Dandylyon Drama Summer Theatre Camp held at Shoreline Community College in Shoreline, Washington. A Dandylyon Drama Directing team will develop the show with actors ranging in age between 8-14. Camp culminates with a single performance on a professional stage with costumes, props, sets with audience feedback.
JUDGING CRITERIA
(50%) Speaks to our mission: Dandylyon Drama’s mission is to grow more creative, compassionate, courageous people through quality and accessible performing arts education. Submissions should give students opportunities to engage with these themes.
(25%) Easy to Produce in 1 week camp: Script should lend itself to production with simple sets, props, and costumes and minimal technical needs.
(25%) Appeal: Title or theme has marketability, draw or potential to engage young actors ages 8-14 while also being a family-friendly production that adults and younger audiences will enjoy.
